The conference was a wonderful event, packed with interesting lectures, inspiring workshops and moving rituals – an opportunity to embrace old friends and make new ones, to celebrate together, debate, laugh and dance.
This year the conference took place in Berlin. The venue was the Wartenberger Hof meetings facility in the Wartenberg district. For the first time the event lasted two days instead of one. Wartenberger Hof put its premises at our disposal at an obligingly reasonable price, thus proving as a very generous sponsor of the conference.
It turned out to be a lively and animated gathering. In the outside area were stalls selling Pagan craft objects as well as books and CDs. In a separate tent Patricia Asunja was on hand to give out information about the new Pagan Pride project. The lectures and workshops took place in the inner section (subject to an entrance fee).
A number of the lectures were on the theme of Pagan spiritual care and therapy. Dr. Christopher McIntosh and Dr. Donate McIntosh reported on their project Verdandihilfe – Pagan Spiritual Care. Voenix spoke about Trauma Diagnosis from a Shamanic Perspective and ended the talk with a short ritual. Ina Cüsters van Bergen spoke about Transpersonal Magic.
Two lectures dealt with the theme of ethics. Fr. Sri Sydasti spoke on Thelemic Ethics, and the Rev. Ellie Lazzaro on The Way of the Priest in Respect to Virtues, Ethics and the German Law. Both lectures stimulated a lively debate.
For those interested in particular forms of Paganism, past and present, there were lectures by Bee Helygen on Cerridwen Priestess Trainig in the Goddess Temple, and by Prof. Dr. Isolde Stark on Religion, Cults and Rituals in the Public and Private Domain in Ancient Greece and Rome.
An item that aroused particularly strong interest was Sinmara’s overview of the Pagan movement in Germany under the title We are the Ones with the Many Gods – Paganism and the PFI in the Public Eye. Another popular attraction was Peti Songcatcher’s account of her journeys to Reclaiming Witchcamps under the title Ritual Music – What is it? The talk was accompanied by singing with audience participation.
Those who wanted practical activity could take part in workshops by Linda on Ritual Painting with Henna and by Bianca Wertheimer on making Goddess Spirit Dolls. Faye and Andreas led a workshop on Circle Dancing in Ritual with active audience participation.
As usual there was a variety of rituals. In addition to the Opening Ritual and Closing Ritual, both led by members of different Berlin groups, there was an Asatru Blot and a Reclaiming Ritual.
The side programme was particular varied this time and met with a good attendance. High-grade literary entertainment was provided by readings given by Duke Meyer from his book Lied der Eibe (Song of the Yew) and by Christopher McIntosh from his story collection Master of the Starlit Grove (in German translation). A special highlight was Inara’s captivating dance performance, the Goddess Show.
Music was of course not lacking. In the context of the opening, after the address by Sinmara, the band Paganland gave an enchanting performance, strongly marked by the unmistakable tones of their Iranian homeland. The evening programme consisted of Pagan songs by Peti Songcatcher, Paula Noske and Duke Meyer, as usual thrillingly performed with the audience joining in.
When the conference ended on Sunday afternoon all the participants could look back on many interesting experiences, inspiring meetings and an altogether convivial time. The staff of the Wartenberger Hof provided friendly service and excellent meals and refreshment.
