AUGUST 2008

Forthcoming Events at The Atlantis Bookshop
www.theatlantisbookshopevents.com

This is the current listing of Evenings With... It is going to have some additional dates and it will
be best to check the events website for them. www.theatlantisbookshopevents.com
Everything is a firm date but the venue will have to change if we get the dates for the building
work before the end of the year.

FRIDAY 8TH AUGUST An Evening With... EDWIN POUNCEY & SANDY ROBERTSON on
MONTAGUE SUMMERS.

Summers was a renegade Reverend and author of an impressive list of books that were
indispensible reading for anyone over the age of 40. They have stood the test of time and
Vampire in Europe, The Vampire, The Werewolf and of course Witchcraft and Black Magic are
still very alluring titles. He had an interesting personal life for a rotund cleric and this talk will
deal with the man as well as their re-discovery of his grave and the work that involved.
Edwin Pouncey is well respected as the illustrator Savage Pencil for Wire magazine as well as a
music critic of great range.
Sandy Robertson was a music journalist in the ’70’s and 80’s, is author of the Aleister Crowley
Scrapbook – it has been in print for 20 years – and even lunched with William Burroughs.

FRIDAY 15TH AUGUST An Evening With... EMMA RESTALL ORR
on LIVING WITH HONOUR
Living With Honour: A book about Pagan Ethics. Given the anarchistic nature of most modern
Pagan paths, to present Pagan ethics could be seen brash but this is what Emma has done in
her latest book, Living with Honour. She will talk about the basis of her ideas, reasoning her
vision from her own animistic Druidic perspective, exploring the nature of honour, of duty and
ecstasy, and where an ethical framework can and should sit within modern Paganism. Emma
Restall Orr is head of The Druid Network, an organisation she set up after stepping away as
joint chief of The British Druid Order in 2002. She founded Honouring the Ancient Dead
(HAD) in 2004, an advocacy group working with archaeologists, museums and heritage bodies
about increasing respect for ancient British human remains. She is a teacher, priest and writer,
her previous books including Living Druidry, Druid Priestess and Ritual.

THURSDAY 21 ST AUGUST An Evening With... STEVE TROMANS
Steve Tromans uses an Indian Harmonium and writes Thelemically inspired music for it. He will
be performing selections from his musical setting of Liber Al vel Legis as well as a new
realisation of his 2005 work, Urquart Fifths(for four melodicas) inspired by his visits to Scotland.
Steve has been active on the music scene since the late 80’s, as well as having led a series of
acclaimed bands. He toured Allen Ginsburg’s Howl to great acclaim. In 2006 he moved to
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, where he set up Mongolia's first Jazz Academy.
“’Very passionate, fresh... great musicianship." ‘Keith Tippett, legendary pianist.
"Truly unique musical treatment of Liber AL... powerful and invocative."
Raphael Noir, The Oracle Mirror No. 5, 2006. www.steve-tromans.co.uk

WEDNESDAY 27TH AUGUST An Evening With... HILARY CARTER on THE 11:11 CODE
Hilary Carter dared to do what few of us would. She followed Coincidence, using the
recurrence of 11:11Code and it did, of course, change her life profoundly. Whenever or
wherever the numbers appeared, that dictated the new direction. It could have been New Age
folly but it wasn’t by any means and took courage and money and tested her belief in these
matters far more than a lot of us would willing to do. A very personal and fascinating account
that re-enforces how we too, could and perhaps should, trust to Fate

SATURDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER THE ILLUMINATES OF THANATEROS PRESENT THE
COLOURS OF CHAOS CONFERENCE. CONWAY HALL. Visit www.coloursofchaos.net for
more information. The Atlantis Bookshop will have a stall at this long awaited conference.

WEDNESDAY 17TH SEPTEMBER An Evening With... PHILIPPA FAULKS & ROBERT COOPER
CAGLIOSTRO, THE MASONIC MAGICIAN.
Count Alessandro Cagliostro was a cult figure of European society before the French
Revolution. An alchemist, healer and Freemason, he inspired both wild devotion and savage
ridicule – and novels by Alexander Dumas, a drama by Goethe and Mozart’s opera The Magic
Flute. His sincere belief in the magical powers, including immortality, conferred by his Egyptian
Rite of Freemasonry won him fame, but made him dangerous enemies too. His celebrated
travels through the Middle East and the capitals of Europe ended abruptly in Rome in 1789,
where he was arrested by the Inquisition and condemned to death for heresy.
The Masonic Magician tells Cagliostro’s extraordinary story, complete with the first English
translation of the Egyptian Rite ever published. This engaging account, drawing on remarkable
new documentary evidence, shows that the man condemned was a genuine visionary and true
champion of Freemasonry.
Philippa Faulks is a writer of alternative history, mystery and religion with a special interest in the
magical life of ancient Egypt. She lives in Suffolk.
Robert L D Cooper FRSA BA FSA (Scot) is a historian and leading Freemasonry scholar. He is
curator of the Grand Lodge of Scotland.

SATURDAY 4TH OCTOBER QABALAH THROUGH THE WORLDS
A WORKSHOP WITH DAVID RANKINE
A MASTER CLASS IN ADVANCED PRACTICES AND CONCEPTS FOR WORKING WITH
THE TREE OF LIFE
The Qabalah underlies the magickal systems of the Western Mystery Tradition. Yet many of its
most effective practices have been ignored or forgotten in recent centuries. This workshop will
focus on exploring techniques which can be applied to creating magickal change, such as the
development of Ruach ha-Qadosh, the power of prophecy referred to in the Old Testament.
Many of the medieval texts on Qabalah contains hints and ideas which provide signposts for
effective spiritual growth through the Tree of Life, such as the steps required for effective use
of prayer, and the different types of light and when to use them appropriately. These ideas,
together with the chiromantic attributions of the Tree of Life and the importance of fragrance
are all themes which will be studied through the day.
The power of the Hebrew alphabet is often neglected, and we will consider the letters and
meditational techniques for working with them to strengthen the astral body, attract desired
qualities and achieve inner balance. A working knowledge of the Tree of Life is required for this
workshop, a basic knowledge of the Hebrew alphabet will be advantageous.
David Rankine is a magician, author and researcher who has been studying and practising
Qabalah for the last 30 years. For the last ten years he has lectured widely on the practical
aspects of working with the Qabalah. David's book Climbing the Tree of Life is widely
praised for extending the horizons of magickal Qabalah. He is currently working on a new
series of books on the Qabalah, and with Stephen Skinner on The Veritable Key of Solomon,
the fourth volume of the Sourceworks of Ceremonial Magic series. .

Street.

Marian Green has edited Quest magazine for 41 years which doesn’t seem possible as she has
the energy of a 20 year old. She did have a wise head on young shoulders and now she is a
legendary Wise Woman. Her books are reliable for how to do practical work and get the
results you want. This is a rare opportunity to be taught by her and one well worth having.

Forthcoming Events at The Atlantis Bookshop
www.theatlantisbookshopevents.com

MONDAY 20TH UNTIL 23RD OCTOBER ISAAC AND PHAEDRA BONEWITZ.
Isaac has been almost everything in his long Occult life. Qabalist, Witch, Druid. It seems sensible
therefore, to have an evening on each of these subjects on his rare trip to England.
Modular Ritual Design
From the arcane art of computer programming comes a whole new approach to the equally
arcane art of creating effective ceremonies: "modular ritual design." Isaac and Phaedra will
discuss the many uses that a computer programming metaphor can have for ritual design.
They'll show how general problem solving techniques can be applied to the complexities of
ceremony, and demonstrate how the modular approach can be used to modify successful
rituals from the past into effective future ones.
How to Perform a Druidic Liturgy - Isaac and Phaedra present a detailed explanation of the
liturgical methods developed by Isaac and others for the Neopagan Druid movement. Unlike
Wiccan ceremonies, most Druidic ones are meant to be experienced by large groups of
people, so their liturgical design, preparation, and performance require significant variations to
handle the larger population factors. Isaac and Phaedra will discuss these in detail, as well as the
importance of the polytheology, cosmology and aesthetics involved, as they go step-by-step
through a standard liturgical design for Neopagan Druid worship.

SATURDAY 25TH & SUNDAY 26TH OCTOBER
CANONBURY MASONIC RESEARCH CENTRE CONFERENCE.
FREEMASONRY AND THE NATURAL SCIENCES is the theme this year. An important and
truly international conference with the best speakers in each field delivering papers in glorious
surroundings. We will be having a stall there again this year.

THURSDAY 30 OCTOBER SCOTT HAWKINS; PARA-MUSICAL ABSTRACTIONS FROM
THE ANCIENT BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND THE PARTIALLY
PREDICTABLE/UNPREDICTABLE AESTHETICS OF THE END TIME.
Yes, that’s right, para-musical abstractions from the ancient built environment and the partially
predictable/unpredictable aesthetics of the end time. What it means is that Scott Hawkins has
visited several ancient and important sites and recorded the music of the megaliths.
From Ley Lines to Stone Circles, Scott’s interest is with the manufacture of unusual musical
instruments and their sounds. Whether plotting intervals derived from Ley Lines (to create new
musical scales) or using Stone Circles as an inspiration for rhythms, his partially predictable /
partially unpredictable aesthetic has developed from primitive inspirations.
He will be performing 'live' with his paramusical instruments and discussing the art, science
(psychology) and magic of stones.
Scott is an experimentalist, outsider, has a career history that spans aerospace engineering,
industrial design and performance art, with specific interest in sensory stimulation at the margins
of human perception, 3D and beyond.

FRIDAY 31ST OCTOBER ANDY MERCER TRUE GHOST STORIES
What better way to spend Halloween than hearing firsthand accounts of ghosts, hauntings and
exploration of strange phenomena by candle light in the basement of The Atlantis Bookshop.
Andy Mercer has been ghost hunting for several years and is involved with the London
Paranormal Society.

TUESDAY 11th - THURSDAY 13TH NOVEMBER SUE URE POTTERY.
Sue Ure is a fabulous, elemental potter and will be over from her home in France for this week
only. Her work rather has to be good as she lives on the Michael leyline!

FRIDAY 14TH NOVEMBER An Evening With... GEO TREVARTHEN
THE SEEKERS GUIDE TO HARRY POTTER.
Why are so many people drawn to Harry Potter? The phenomenon tells us a lot about what
our culture lacks, and the books go on to say more than you may think about how to fill those
voids. The novels weave many alchemical, spiritual and magical themes into their narrative. For
example, the four Hogwarts houses correspond to the four alchemical elements and four
magickal precepts. This evenings talk is based on Dr. Trevarthen's book, which draws from
spiritual and scholarly sources to offer a deeper sense of magic and meaning in the novels and
in our own lives. For more, see http://www.celticshamanism.com

SATURDAY 15TH NOVEMBER Dr GEO THREVARTHEN CELTIC SHAMANISM
WORKSHOP Celtic tradition teaches us how to bring Spirit's power into daily life. Despite its
antiquity, it’s worth isn't limited to the Celtic tribes who roamed Europe two thousand years
ago, or to their descendants, because Celtic tradition formed one basis for the Western worldview.
The problem is that the spiritual part of the tradition was lost to most of us, leaving a
gutted cosmology. Through meditation, chant in Old Irish, and the visionary technique of the
echtra or spirit journey, we can experience spiritual reality as personally and vividly today as
Celtic shaman-priests did millennia ago. For more see http://www.celticshamanism.com/
Dr. Geo Athena Trevarthen was raised in a Scottish and Irish hereditary shamanic tradition,
Geo has practiced magick and shamanism all her life. She went on to study shamanism,
psychology, anthropology, ancient religions and Celtic Studies. She received a PhD from the
University of Edinburgh for her groundbreaking work on Celtic shamanism. (She was the first to
academically prove the existence of a full spectrum of shamanic features in Celtic cultures.)
Geo teaches with wisdom and humour, sharing ancient chants and shamanic practices to reveal
Spirit's presence with and within us. More information can be found at
www.celticshamanism.com

WEDNESDAY 19TH NOVEMBER PHILIPPA FAULKS on CAGLIOSTRO at the Canonbury
Masonic Research Centre. Another opportunity to hear about this much maligned man.

SATURDAY 22 NOVEMBER EMMA RESTALL ORR KISSING THE HAG; THE DARK
GODDESS AND THE UNACCEPTABLE NATURE OF WOMEN WORKSHOP.
Emma Restall Orr's book, Kissing the Hag, is about the many faces of the dark goddess of
nature and how she has a tendency to make us impossible and miserable. It is an
uncompromising book, thick with women's stories, taking the reader from the wild freedom of
childhood, and on through the complications of our female nature: the dismissive and frigid, the
promiscuous, the needy and demanding, the destructive, the manipulative, to the boring old
bag. It is a thought-provoking book, a challenging book, and perhaps most of all a book of
devotion. The workshop will be an opportunity to explore these aspects of nature - it is for
wild women devoted to the dark goddess and those who fear her, and for the men who have
to deal with women who are bloody wonderful and bloody difficult.
Workshop and Book Launch 11until 5-ish £40.00. Refreshments provided. There are plenty of
cafes for lunch in Museum Street.

MONDAY 1ST DECEMBER An Evening With... GERALDINE BESKIN ALEISTER CROWLEY –

we wanted to mark the occasion again. It is just Geraldine Beskin this time presenting her new
talk for your delight and delectation.

Visconti family. Kay will discuss how the Quantum Tarot, a deck themed around 20th and 21st
century physics, points the way to new developments in tarot. The Quantum Tarot uses
dramatic images of space from the Hubble Telescope along with more traditional tarot

hexagram which incredibly involves Stonehenge, Glastonbury, Avebury and the famous St
Michael Line. One of its lines is also one of the sides of the Bluestones Triangle, involving
Stonehenge and the Preseli Mountains. Peter's journey up and down the fifteen lines of the
Astrum is told, including the discovery of several new megaliths, Knights Templar sites, wells
and springs and symbolic church architecture. Peter Knight has written six books on sacred
sites, ancient wisdom and ley lines, and is well known in the South for his lively and enthusiastic
workshops, convention lectures and field trips to sacred sites.
This is the London Launch of the book - not to be missed.

11 March – GERALDINE BESKIN – Manly P. Hall: The Murdered Mystic?
Manly P. Hall wrote a shelf full of books and they influenced the last seventy years of esoteric
thought here and in America. He wrote Secret Teachings of all Ages famous title in his early
Twenties and a shelf full of other books. His Philosophical Research Centre was part of his $5
million real estate holdings that were mysteriously ‘signed away’ days before his death was
announced. He was a ‘great big avocado’ of a man and had charisma, was a great orator and
sharp businessman who was much loved. So why was he dis-interred? Why are the family so
distraught? Why was he denuded of his wealth just before death?
Geraldine Beskin is the owner of The Atlantis Bookshop with her daughter Bali Beskin. Tonight
is so she can share images of M P Hall as a young man when he had flashing eyes, a Mesmeric
stare and the body of a Hollywood star. Other than that, there is a mystery to be unravelled as
to how and what caused his death and why.

25 March – SHANI OATES – Sin Eating: Its relevance to the Craft
Though Shani now lives quietly in the Derbyshire countryside, she was born and raised in
Yorkshire by Bohemian parents where her palette for the extraordinaire was tantalised at an
early age, forging a life-long devotion to the Mysteries. Shani’s private argosy parallels a public
path which has traversed through a rewarding study of comparative religions, archaeology,
history, art criticism, photography and several occult modalities that include the Kabbalah,
certain strands of Gnosticism and Sufism. She is also a third degree Wiccan High Priestess.
Having been a lone practitioner of the arte for decades, her earnest training in specifics came
largely from her mentor, Evan John Jones, Magister of the Clan of Tubal Cain. After being
appointed by him as Maid, Shani became Virtue holder of that legacy; her argosy continues
now in spirit.

Every other Wednesday. Only £2. 7:30 for 8pm start.

lane off Essex Street and Fleet Street at the Strand end. Nearest Tube: Temple.

The Moot meets at The Devereux Arms in Devereux Court which is a lovely old pub with good food, good beer and good company. Opposite the Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand (near Aldwych) is a Tudor-style pub, the George. The Devereux is down the alley next to this. See map at http://tinyurl.com/cp7u2. 7:30 for an 8pm start entrance £2.

8 April - PHILLIP COPPENS - Servants of the Grail.
This is the first book to successfully identify both the historical figures on which the protagonists of the Grail story is based and the identity of the Grail itself.
Years of research has unveiled that the Grail account describes the events of a specific timeframe, in a specific location: the royal court of Aragon where the mysterious ’Grail’ is the focus of attention. The main protagonists are the king’s immediate family and their reaction to arrival of his nephew. Based on existing academic research, Philip Coppens has been able to identify that the characters in the Grail are real people;
- the Grail is, materialistically, a foundation stone, similar to the ones found in Mecca and at one time in Jerusalem.
- the story of the Grail is also based on the fourth Hermetic treatise, known as The Cup, or The Krater. The Grail story is actually a Western European rendering of a pre-Christian Graeco-Egyptian religious story on how to live a pious life so that the soul will be able to meet God.
The end result is a book that brings the true Grail accounts to life – both its people and its nature.
Philip Coppens is an author and investigative journalist, ranging from the world of politics to ancient history and mystery. He is the editor-in-chief of the Dutch magazine Frontier, as well as a frequent contributor to Nexus Magazine and New Dawn Magazine. He is the author of The Stone Puzzle of Rosslyn Chapel, The Canopus Revelation, Land of the Gods, The New Pyramid Age and Servants of the Grail.

22 April - STEVE PATTERSON – The Cunning Craftsman
On a rare visit from the wilds of the West Country Steve will be talking about the Cunning Crafts, the crafting of magical tools and much more including The Green Man's journey, from Eden to Nemaea - an exploration of the mysteries of the foliate head.

6 May - MARIAN GREEN - Exploring the Invisible.
Now, there is a subject! How and why should we? So many ways and reasons for accessing the unknown, the unseen, the mysterious are still strange to us. Marian Green is a ‘no frills’ kind of occultist and goes directly to the point.
Marian Green is the editor of Quest magazine, and has written many books including ‘A Witch Alone’ and ‘The Gentle Arts of Natural magic’.

20 May - DAVID PARRY - Charles Darwin and the Northern Tradition
As part of this year’s Darwin bicentenary celebrations, Parry will be revisiting the academic legacy of the great British naturalist and uncovering previously unsuspected links to our nascent heathen heritage. Parry will also be discussing ethics, spirituality, as well as the philosophical problems in a purely environmental interpretation of human beings as successful apes amid ice and flowers.
David Parry is a respected scholar and poet with a new book coming out later this year. His collection of poetry, ‘Caliban’s Redemption’ was noted for its literary worth.

3 June - NIGEL PENNICK - The Bloomsbury Wonder.
The legend that is Nigel Pennick, respected Folklorist and multiple enthusiast will be sharing his knowledge of esoteric architecture with a visit to St George’s Church Bloomsbury. The Moot with No Name has hired the church for the evening so we can experience this wonderful building for ourselves with insights to Nicholas Hawksmoors ‘hidden’ symbolism. He was a pupil of Sir Christopher Wren who built St Paul’s Cathedral and this is one of the seven London Churches that Hawksmoor designed.
The fee for this evening will be £5.00. Meet at St. George’s Church, Bloomsbury Way at 7.30 prompt please. It is literally just around the corner from The Atlantis Bookshop. Please note the change of venue and cost for this event.

1JULY - HARMONIA SAILLE – SPIRITUAL RUNES
Harmonia Saille will give a talk about connecting with your runes.
When we read the rune symbols they act as a catalyst or messenger between the unconscious and conscious mind, and reveal truths that were previously hidden to us. The runes also act as a messenger between deity and us, so we have a double connection.
There are many students who cannot or do not know how to make the all important spiritual or psychic connection to their runes. They may indeed have become personally attached to them, having spent much time making and preparing them, but there is so much more to the runes than this.
There are generally two ways in which students can form a psychic or spiritual connection with their runes, by tapping into or becoming aware of a channel between the unconscious and conscious mind, and by tapping into and becoming aware of a channel between deity and you, or the macrocosm and the microcosm, whichever way you wish to work. These can be used in combination with each other.
Harmonia will discuss such things as Mythology, Norse Cosmology, The Norns, Orlog, Wyrd, and Synchronicity, and how these can help you form a bond with your runes just as you do when you become familiar with a trusted friend. This will help you to understand your runes better and to use them to their full advantage.
Copies of The Spiritual Runes, A Guide to the Ancestral Wisdom by Harmonia Saille will be available to buy this evening.

15 JULY – CHRIS STREET –EARTHSTARS: LONDON CITY OF REVELATION. An Illustrated Presentation.
Chris Street’s Earthstars discovery reveals that London’s sacred sites are not scattered around the capital at random. Their locations form a vast and very specific pattern of sacred geometry on the landscape. It is a recognisable temple groundplan, and one is marked by the stones of Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s, The Tower of London, and a great many ancient local parish churches. It suggests that London conceals a vast landscape temple, or is founded upon the design of a Holy City. Interestingly, the work of John Michell indicates that this geometry also relates to the biblical City of Revelation, the New Jerusalem, whose appearance is said to herald the end of the world. These days, it’s more likely to be environmentalists who tell us the end is nigh, rather than visionary prophets. With the end of the Mayan calendar(2012) approaching, and our political, financial and criminal justice systems in meltdown, along with the polar ice-caps, are they right? The Earthstars discovery suggests a more positive picture. This geometric matrix seems to be a circuit diagram for an energy that brings healing, inspiration and transformation.
Come and experience some of its magic through this illustrated presentation.
Chris Street has been researching London's Visionary Landscape since in the early 80’s. He is author of several books, including Earthstars, The Visionary Landscape and the Beer Guru's Guide (A questionable path of enlightenment.) His new book, London's Camelot and the Secrets of the Grail will be published shortly before the MWNN talk, so some early copies will be available. He's been a member of the Order of Bards Ovates and Druids for over twenty years and is particularly interested in Tarot, Celtic Shamanism, sacred geometry and The Secret Tradition in Arthurian Legend.

29 JULY – JACK GALE – ATOZOMANCY: The Game of Chance and the Speaking of the Landscape
A talk from our very own Occult Gent about Town. Jack Gale will be discussing the gentle art of control, abdication and surrender as a means of interacting with the spirits of the landscape. Shamanism, Chaos Magic and Earth Mysteries take tea together! This talk deals with the application of contemporary techniques and also takes a historical perspective into account with a nod to the works of surrealist Louis Aragon and the 60’s Alchemist Mark Boyle plus Nigel Pennick and Julian Vayne.

Wednesday 12 August - Gary Dickinson - Revealing the Stele
The Stele of Revealing, originally the funerary stele of Ankh-af-na-Khonsu, an Ancient Egyptian priest, has become an icon of Thelema. The Book of the Law describes it as the ‘Kiblah’, the focal point of Thelemic ritual. Aleister Crowley’s own copy of the Stele accompanied him throughout his life as a measure of it’s importance to him.
Gary Dickinson looks at the ancient origins of the Stele of Revealing, its role in the Cairo Working and the reception of the Book of the Law in 1904, its importance in Crowley’s subsequent magical career, and its significance today.

Gary Dickinson, a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society, is the artist-executant of The Company of Heaven, which produces replicas of the Stele of Revealing. Examples of his work will be available on the evening.

This talk is taking place on the Thelemic Feast Day of The Feast for the First Night of The Prophet and his Bride.

Forthcoming Talks at The Moot With No Name:

26 August – John Moore – Aleister Crowley: A Modern Master
AC’s many accomplishments and earnest, practical study of oriental mysticism, brought him to an intense appreciation of vital features of the twentieth century zeitgeist. In a world that has passed through pop and postmodernism exclusion of Crowley’s challenging critical presence is something that should not be permitted to continue.

9 September – Martin Robinson - Crafting the Charge
The Charge of the Goddess has had a profound influence, with its vision of an all-encompassing mother goddess and a religion of joy. But where did the Charge come from, and how did it reach its present form? A close look at the Charge and its sources tells a story about the shaping of Wicca in its early days, and highlights Doreen Valiente's contribution to the direction of modern paganism.

23 September – Courtney Davis - The Sacred Art of Courtney Davis
The art of Courtney Davis is an expression of the ancient symbols, myths and legends of the Celtic culture and he creates his images through the inspiration of the Celtic Spirit. Author and illustrator of over 50 books here he speaks for the first time about the spiritual methods used to create his works of art.
This evening ties in with Exhibition Courtney is having at The Atlantis Bookshop which runs from Thursday 3rd to Saturday 26th September.

7 October – Andrew Mercer - TRUE ghost stories
Andy Mercer has filmed and recorded them for years and has many a true tale to tell...

21 October – Shani Oates – Robert Cochrane: The Man, the Myth and his Magick.
Shani Oates, Maid of the Clan of Tubal Cain returns to The Moot With No Name to tell us about Cochrane’s life, work aspirations and legacy.

4 November – Michael Berman PhD. - Dzyzlan, the Mother of Water: A Guided Visualisation through Abkhazia.
There are many stories in mythology and folklore about marriage between mortals and water-spirits, and this evening we hear the story of Dzyzlan.

18 November – Rat Scabies – Topic to be announced.
Back by popular demand, Rat joins us for another Damned fine evening!

2 December – Andrew Collins - Lost Underworld of the Pharaohs
Andrew Collins has rediscovered and entered a previously unknown cave system beneath the Pyramids of Giza. In 1817 Henry Salt, the then Consul General to Egypt, discovered its entrance west of the Great Pyramid. He and Giovanni Caviglia entered three large, interconnected chambers. Salt’s memoirs were never published, and the site was lost. Following some incredible detective work in 2008, Andrew and a team entered Salt’s catacombs and recorded this lost world in pictures and words. It is the subject of his upcoming book Beneath the Pyramids, and he will reveal more about his discoveries and its implications for our understanding of ancient Egyptian funerary texts in this presentation.

16 December – Saturnalia!
If you can sing, dance, tell a joke or even just be funny then bring your party piece along to share!

Your Moot needs YOU!

We are now booking speakers for 2010 so if you would like to give a talk, know someone who would be perfect for the Moot or can suggest who we should approach please contact The Atlantis Bookshop on 020 7405 2120 or email us atlantis::at::theatlantisbookshop.com

Revealing the Stele: A one day seminar
Saturday 19th September 2009 e.v.

The Atlantis Bookshop, in association with the Company of Heaven, is pleased to offer an opportunity to take a closer look at the Stele of Revealing, the central icon of Thelema.
Recently presented at the Moot-with-No-Name, ‘Revealing the Stele’ develops themes outlined in the original lecture.

The seminar will be presented by Gary Dickinson, a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and artist executant for the Company of Heaven, which produces replicas of the Stele. Gary has a wide experience of presentations to museums throughout the world, most recently the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Programme:
10.00 – 10.30am - Reception at The Atlantis Bookshop
The seminar will be formally opened with a ritual recitation of Crowley’s paraphrase of the hieroglyphs of the Stele of Revealing.

The Stele – A Pre-History
Now regarded as an icon of Thelema, the Stele of Revealing is an ancient Egyptian artefact that played a vital function in the funeral ritual of its original owner, Ankhefenkhonsu, a 25th dynasty priest of Montu.

The morning session places the Stele of Revealing back into its original context, examining the origins and development of funerary stelae in ancient Egypt.

The Stele’s specific iconography will be discussed in relation to ancient Egyptian belief systems and changes in burial practice.

The first session concludes with a visit to the Egyptian galleries in the nearby British Museum to see actual examples including objects from the burials of the priesthood of Montu.

Lunch – an optional private lunch at The Plough, a haunt of Crowley’s sometimes described as the ‘Magician’s Pub’.

The Revelation
The afternoon session concentrates on the Thelemic dimension of the Stele of Revealing. The presentation will look at the Stele’s role in the ‘Cairo Working’ of 1904 and its relationship with the Liber AL vel Legis, the Book of the Law.

The influence of the Stele of Revealing on the life and writings of Crowley will be discussed, examining John St John (1908), The Vision & the Voice (1909), the ‘Miracle of St Jane Cheron’ and other references in Crowley’s diaries (1920) and the Book of Thoth (1944).

The day will conclude with a visit to Cleopatra’s Needle on the Thames Embankment where, in 1937, Crowley famously gave copies of the Book of the Law to representatives of the races of humanity.

The seminar costs £31.00 per person (lunch not included). Payment is to be made in advance please.
Spaces are strictly limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Please contact The Atlantis Bookshop to book your place.

The Magical I Ching: A six week course starting on
Monday 2nd November 2009
7:30 –9:00
The Atlantis Bookshop
£15 per module

“If some years were added to my life, I would devote them to study of the Yi…” Confucius

The Company of Heaven, in association with The Atlantis Bookshop, is pleased to announce
‘The Magical I Ching’, a practical introduction to the Book of Changes.

Starting on Monday 2nd November 2009, the six-module course will give participants the basic vocabulary to begin their own dialogue with the ancient Chinese Oracle of Change. The I Ching has been a source of wisdom and guidance for over 2,500 years. Its profound philosophy and its reputation as an extraordinarily accurate system of divination have ensured that the I Ching has also found a place in the Western magical tradition.

Learn about the traditional history of the I Ching and key facts in its historical development as a system of divination in China and throughout the world.

Participants will be introduced to the basic philosophical concepts of the I Ching, the traditional symbolic significance of the eight trigrams and explore their correlation with the Qabalistic Tree of Life.

There will be the opportunity to learn two traditional methods of consultation, and a third method used by Aleister Crowley.

As one of the first Westerners to practice divination using the I Ching, Crowley consulted the Book of Changes daily for lengthy periods during his life, frequently using it during important magical workings.

Crowley regarded his attribution of the eight trigrams of the I Ching to the Qabalistic Tree of Life as one of his greatest achievements. His approach to the I Ching using these correspondences gives both a unique insight into the symbolic structure of the I Ching and also a fresh perspective on the Tree of Life.

The course will be supported by notes summarising each module’s content and there will be opportunities to encounter materials and artefacts historically related to the I Ching or associated with Crowley and the China that he visited in 1906.

The course is aimed at individuals interested in practising divination using the I Ching and is particularly relevant for those with an interest in Crowley’s approach to the system.

Traditional style Chinese coins and divination sticks will be provided. In addition, The Company of Heaven has produced a limited series of 8 Stele of Revealing specially dedicated to connect with the Tao.

The course comprises of 6 weekly, one and a half hour modules on Monday evenings (7.30-9.00pm) commencing on Monday 2nd November at The Atlantis Bookshop. Cost £15.00 per module.

The course will be presented by Gary Dickinson, The Company of Heaven’s artist executant. A Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society, Gary has studied Chinese history, philosophy and art for over 25 years, lecturing extensively around the world.

Dear Everyone,

We have had a lovely busy summer and autumn is hectic too. We hope the same can be said for you. Bali’s wedding and the scorching weather are but happy memories. A big Thank You to everybody who sent their good wishes, it really was lovely of you all.

At the moment, we have our third art exhibition of the year in the Gallery Downstairs as the room has become known.
Charles Newington ‘Revelations’ is based on the Book of Revelation and has suitably dramatic, erotic and darkly beautiful paintings on show. 11 until 6 Monday – Saturday until 3rd November.
Charles designed and made, with the help of the Ghurkas, the very splendid white horse on the cliffs at Folkestone. www.whitehorsefolkestone.co.uk/

From 9 – 21 November we have a posthumous exhibition of the paintings of Jean Overton Fuller who sadly died earlier this year. Her biographies of spies, Sickert and Victor Neuberg demonstrated her interest in people and she painted them too. Chickens and cats were other favourite subjects. They have a charm and will be for sale at modest prices. The exhibition will be open Monday to Saturday 11am - 6pm.

For those of you who missed the Courtney Davis Celtic Art Exhibition, we had such a great response to his work that we now keep his prints in stock. www.celtic-art.com

Some calendars and the Scared Journey Journal have arrived and more will be in soon. Yule cards are on their way too.

The British Film Institute is hosting a Witchcraft Film Night on Saturday 31st October. Alex Sanders, Gerald Gardner and Margaret Murray all appear – though not together.

Monday evening is our night for evening classes. The Magical I-Ching with Gary Dickinson will start on Monday 2nd November and run for 6 weeks until 7th December. 7.30 start. £15.00 per module. Gary is a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and a marvellous presenter as he has so ably demonstrated a couple of times this year for us. The course is aimed at individuals interested in practicing divination using the I-Ching and is particularly relevant to those with an interest in Crowley’s approach to the system.

Wednesday 4th November. Michael Berman will be offering an interpretation of the Myth of Dzylan. This is a Moot with No Name at the Devereux Arms, Devereux Court, off Fleet Street. 8 o’clock sharp start. £2.00 and a raffle.

Saturday 7th November. David Goddard: Pathworking the Tree of Life. A day long workshop where the theory as well as the practice will be explored. The possible pitfalls and the benefits of exploring the Starry Path will be expertly discussed with this very experienced teacher. A pathworking will be undertaken too. 10.30 for an 11 o’clock start. £50. Includes refreshments.

Wednesday 18th November and the fabled Punk drummer with The Damned, Rat Scabies will be at The Moot with No Name. Details as above but come along early if you want a seat.

Saturday 28th November. David Goddard will be offering a very unusual workshop. The Words of Power are often mentioned but what are they, when are they used, what should they sound like? The clarity of David’s explanations and his many years of practical training give us confidence in hosting such a rare opportunity. 10.30 for 11. £50.00. Refreshments included.

Tuesday 1st December. Crowleymass. Come along to our celebration of the life and times of Aleister Crowley on the 62nd anniversary of his death. £10 for a night you may or may not remember! 7pm until late even though it is a school night.

Wednesday 2nd December. Andrew Collins, psychic investigator extraordinaire will be at The Moot with No Name. Andrew has been into the catacombs under the pyramid at Giza and will be showing what they are like and revealing various of his discoveries. www.andrewcollins.com

Two themes have recurred through this – David Goddard and The Moot with No Name.

David is a fine teacher who has been well trained in the Western Mysteries and has a large practical knowledge. For more about him and The Rising Phoenix Foundation, visit www.rpxf.org

The Moot with No Name is London’s premier pub moot and has had a new lease of life since we took it over this year. It is a friendly, informal and informative few hours and corny thought it may sound, people meet as strangers and leave as friends. If you have a topic or an author you would like to hear, please let us know and we will try and arrange an evening. We meet in The Devereux Arms, Devereux Court WC2 which is off Essex Street, where Fleet Street meets The Strand. It is hidden away but a lovely pub once it is found. The format is the usual one of a speaker followed by questions and answers. The talk starts at 8pm sharp and the formal part of the evening is over by 10 o’clock.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Best wishes,
Bali Beskin and Geraldine Beskin.

6 JANUARY 2010 - GIRONA, A CITY OF SECRETS.
Directed by Carrie Kirkpatrick as part of the Mystical Legends series, this film was scheduled to be screened by Controversial TV late last year and after one showing it was banned. Why has never been explained. Why is a mystery. It deals with the Mystery History of this fine Italian city and what is explored does not seem to be very contentious. In addition to the film, exclusive footage of the Best Conspiracy Suggestion Prize giving will be shown.

13 JANUARY - GRAHAM HARVEY - INDIGENISING PAGANISM IN THE MORE THAN HUMAN WORLD.
Paganism began as a popularising of western esotericism but drawing on additional roots which made it distinctive. Two of these have been particularly significant from the start: the priority of ritual performance and the celebration of Nature, most often in selected places. These various roots and the emerging trajectories of Pagan diversity might permit us to define Paganism as both ‘indigenous’ and as ‘not indigenous’. In setting out what this means I will argue that an increasing stress on Animism is one indication of an indigenising movement among Pagans, parallel to those among indigenous peoples.
Graham Harvey is Reader in Religious Studies at the Open University. In addition to research among Pagans, he has been a guest-researcher among various indigenous peoples and among Jews. He has also hung out with hippies at Stonehenge and hedgehogs internationally.

20 JANUARY - STEPHANIE NORTH - INITIATION.
What are they? Why have them? What impact should they have?
Stephanie North has worked with The Servants of Light and is an accomplished astrologer.
More information to follow.

27 JANUARY – KIM ARNOLD - PSYCHIC CAFE.
This evening is all about You. Your year ahead. Your hopes and fears and how to be aware of them and how to deal with them. Various forms of divination will be explored. This is an enjoyable way to explore new techniques and learn in a relaxed and fun environment.
Kim Arnold developed and has run the Psychic Cafes for the past few years and we are very glad to now have one in London each month.
Please note, Psychic Cafe events are £8.00 and start at 7.30
Kim Arnold runs the very highly acclaimed Tarot Conference and recently staged the sell out event celebrating the life and times of Pamela Coleman Smith artist of the Rider-Waite Tarot.

3rd FEBRUARY - ROBERT GOODMAN - CONTACTING YOUR DAEMON.
A Talk written especially for the Moot about the Fleet Street area of Old London.
An acclaimed actor of stage and screen (Gangs of New York, The Passenger, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), Robert Goodman is also an experienced Psychogeographer and maker of short films. He has also worked closely with his friend, graphic novelist Alan Moore (Watchmen, V for Vendetta etc.) on research for various projects performed by The Moon and Serpent Grand Egyptian Theatre of Marvels.

10 FEBRUARY- GREGORY SAMS - SUN OF GOD.
Did the universe wait 13,700 million years to manifest consciousness and make it exclusive to us 2 million year old newcomers?
Gregory Sams is and was, precocious. He established organic foods in London via his Seeds, Ceres and Harmony foodshops. He added the word ‘vegeburger’ to the language. After that, he bought fratcals to the wider public. Now, his latest book concerns the Sun but not as we know it. He has been right before...

17 FEBRUARY - GARY DICKINSON - A WALK ACROSS CHINA.
In 1906, Aleister Crowley undertook a trek across China's remote south-western Yunnan Province. There he had an intense spiritual experience, becoming 'intoxicated' by the Chinese landscape.
This re-creation of Crowley's extraordinary journey examines, in their original historical and cultural contexts, the sights and events he encountered on his 'Walk Across China'.
Gary Dickinson is a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. He worked in the field of Chinese art for over twenty years and his 'Imperial Wardrobe: Court Dress of the Qing Period' is regarded as a major source-work on the subject. He was the consultant for the Oscar award-winning costumes for Bertolucci's 'The Last Emperor'. Gary has lectured extensively throughout the world, most recently at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Gary is also a practitioner of I Ching divination with over thirty-years expertise and currently offers consultations with the ancient oracle at The Atlantis Bookshop.

24 FEBRUARY - KIM ARNOLD - PSYCHIC CAFE
Topic to be announced
Please note, Psychic Cafe events are £8.00 and start at 7.30

3 MARCH - ROBIN COUSINS - EDWARD KELLY.
Charlatan and fraudster or the guiding light behind Enochian magic?
Robin Cousins is very much an authority on Elizabethan magic and he has sensible things to say about Dr John Dee’s helpmeet.
Robin Cousins will be presenting his Enochian Course at The Atlantis Bookshop for 6 weeks from Monday 15 February

10 MARCH - LIONEL BEER - THE QUEST FOR CAMELOT.
There are more than a dozen possible sites for Camelot that bear closer analysis. Have you been to London’s Camelot?
Lionel Beer has been actively involved in researching historical places, flying saucers and anomalous phenomenon for 40 years so he knows of what he speaks.

17 MARCH - KATHERINE KNIGHT - HOW SHAKESPEARE CLEANED HIS TEETH.
This is the title of Katherine Knight’s latest highly acclaimed book and it is fascinating, having asked the question, to dig into the answer. All sorts of domestic medicine of the seventeenth century will be shown to be sometimes gruesome, frequently accurate and often still the best way to heal ourselves. Magic, diet, jewels and herbs all put to good use.

24 MARCH – KIM ARNOLD - PSYCHIC CAFE
Topic to be announced
Please note, Psychic Cafe events are £8.00 and start at 7.30

31 MARCH - SIMON BRIGHTON - GODDESSES.
