Its devotees have long been derided and falsely represented as devil worshippers, but Scotland’s most prestigious universities are finally giving their blessing to paganism.
The ancient faith, which holds nature to be sacred, held sway in the British Isles for centuries before being displaced by the arrival of Christianity.
The growing popularity of modern versions of paganism, particularly among the young, has led the University of Edinburgh to appoint its first pagan honorary chaplain. Jean Fowler will dispense spiritual guidance on campus, on a equal footing with ministers, priests, imams and rabbis.
The University of Glasgow hopes to make a similar appointment. The University of Aberdeen appointed a pagan chaplain in 2015, while St Andrews has a Pagan student representative.
