In my profile I only see English, Dutch and French as selectable board languages.
While I'm fine with using English, there are people out there who are interested in using the forum in their native tongue. On the PFI Conference in Germany last weekend I've spoken to several people about the forum, and many asked me if the forum supports german, too. All languages related to the boards in the "Around the world" category are available as Language Packs for phpbb 2.0.xx. IMO making them available to the users would mean raising the acceptance of the forum in general, making it possible for a wider range of users to participate in forum life. |

This forum is quite substantially further developed from the original phpBB. This means that about 1/3rd to 1/2 of the language pack is NOT translated yet - the rest is already available in many languages. But the translations do need thorough checking, for example on the Wrong use of Capitals and other grammatical errors etc.
If anyone is good in english and good in their own mother tongue, accurate, knows their spelling and grammar properly, and is interested in translating the forum software, then there is a full translators pack available from me, with full instructions on which software to go and download, how to use it and so on and so forth.
Rough estimated time investment is one week of free evenings.
Anyone who is willing to make their own language available, please get in touch, either with your own NC or directly with me if you like.
Apart from Dutch, English and French, Portugese is currently being worked on.

I volunteer for the german language pack then.
My results should be good enough to give us a pretty good start, and in case someone has a better idea for a specific translation or finds a mistake I'll do the maintenance as well.
I hope that I can do the editing using my favorite environment: vim on FreeBSD. |

Portugese language pack translated!
Hi all,
We're very happy that Ronaldo from Brazil was willing to translate the Portugese language pack! If you see any errors, you can get in touch with him and he will send me the changes and corrections. If you are not logged in, you can select Portugese using a little flag on the index page. If you are logged in, you can select Portugese in your own profile page.
So thank you Ronaldo!

Hi,
I wanted to give you a short update on the progress of the german language pack:
Yesterday I finished the translation of lang_main.php. I decided to write a short Shell-Script that takes the $lang['...'] expression as a key. This "key" is used for a search on the lang_main.php file of the destination language pack. Every match is then used for a resulting file. If no match is found the original line is written to the resulting file, and a "// PFI-TODO" is appended. Every line of the source file that doesn't contain a hash definition (which would result in a valid "key") is written to the resulting file, too.
This easily creates a new file containing all existing translations, leaving the format and order of the original file intact. In theory, this script should be usable on every Language Pack.
The result is a file where currently ~520 lines need translation. Doing these translations and checking on the existing translations took me about eight hours.
I hope that I'll be able to work on lang_faq.php and lang_bbcode.php this week to finish this job.

Sounds interesting!
I understand that it creates an interim language file with the lines marked that have to be translated, and that would allow you to skip installing the CompareIT program?
Please note though that not all $lang['....'] entries are unique, there are some duplicates (that should remain!) like $lang['datetime']['May']
If it is a php script, please send me a copy so I can maybe use it in the future.
(I'm not familiar with shell scripts yet, maybe you can tell me how to deal with that - use email or PM). |

Hi,
I wanted to give you all some more information of the progress I'm making while translating to message files to german.
Currently I've a really busy day at work, with long working hours, so I'm too tired to do the translations in the evening. lang_main. php, lang_bbcode.php and lang_faq.php are done. I still have to work on some email templates. There are some issues regarding the email templates (or forum behaviour) in regards to german law. For example, we don't have a "CCOPA Act" which means that there might be no need to have the adults grant their permission for their to use the forum. I'd like to discuss this with Sandra later.
So, if you want I can send you the lang_* files so that we have at least a german translation of the forum itself.
Cheers

Hi Christian,
The COPPA files could be left in English if they are not used (which they are not, at the moment).
Don't assume Germany - we are talking about a forum interface language that may be selected by anyone living in any country who likes to speak German!
The COPPA files are there to make sure that parents give their consent in writing to anyone who joins the forum and is under-age. The Forum Admin can switch Coppa registrations on or off, and must provide a fax number as well. For this forum, it is not switched on at the moment.
However, suppose a forum member gives medical advice to an under-age child and something happens, I don't know what the legal situation is if the parents did not give their consent for the child being on that forum. |
