A massive fire consumed Notre-Dame Cathedral on Monday, gutting and destroying the roof of the Paris landmark and stunning France and the world, but firefighters said they had saved the shell of the stone structure from collapse.
Flames that began in the early evening burst rapidly through the roof of the centuries-old cathedral and engulfed the spire, which toppled, quickly followed by the entire roof.
As it burned into the evening, firefighters battled to prevent one of the main bell towers from collapsing. One firefighter was seriously injured — the only reported casualty.

Why Notre-Dame Cathedral, a medieval stone church, has burned so quickly

The church took hundreds of years to build, and wooden support beams that were installed in the cathedral during the 1200s are still there today.

Unlike the stone towers at the front of the building, those wooden frames inside make the church flame-friendly.

Construction crews had been working on a $6.8 million renovation of the church's spire. That spire, pictured below, fell to the flames about an hour after the blaze broke out. A church spokesman told French media that the medieval frame, which is like the church's skeleton, was also alight. That is not good news for the church.
The hulking framework of wooden beams that supports Notre-Dame is composed of huge pieces of timber, which is ripe for catching light. The supports are even called a "foręt" (or forest) because they're enormous pieces of oak. This "charpente" (or frame) was built from 1,300 oak trees, enough wood to fill more than 21 hectares of land, La Tribune reported. According to Notre-Dame de Paris, the church framing is more than 100 meters long, and the beams that are burning have been standing there since the 13th century.

Notre-Dame spokesman Andre Finot said the entire wooden interior of the landmark would likely be destroyed.
"Everything is burning, nothing will remain from the frame," he said.
France's Interior Ministry said firefighters might not be able to save the structure at all, the Associated Press reported.
A spokesman for the Paris prosecutor told CNN that it has launched an investigation into the blaze.

France doesn't have big enough trees to rebuild Notre Dame's famous roof

Restoring Notre-Dame to its original state could be impossible - because France doesn’t have enough trees that measure up to the job.
Bertrand de Feydeau, vice president of preservation group Fondation du Patrimoine, told France Info radio that the wooden roof that went up in flames was built with beams more than 800 years ago from primal forests.
He said the cathedral’s roof cannot be rebuilt exactly as it was before the fire because “we don’t, at the moment, have trees on our territory of the size that were cut in the 13th century”.
